Exam Structure Overview

The Higher Level Maths exam consists of two papers, each worth 300 marks. Both papers are equally weighted and 2.5 hours long.

  • Paper 1 focuses on numerical and algebraic skills. Key topics include Algebra, Complex Numbers, Calculus, and Functions.

  • Paper 2 focuses on applied mathematics. Key topics include Probability, Statistics, Geometry, and Trigonometry.


Passing this subject at H6 or higher awards 25 bonus CAO points, making it the most valuable exam in the Leaving Certificate.

2020–2025 Topic Frequency Analysis

An analysis of the last 12 exam papers, including the deferred sittings, identifies consistent patterns in topic distribution.

Paper 1 Trends

Paper 1 relies heavily on technical fluency.

  • Calculus: Differential and Integral Calculus now account for a significant

  • portion of the paper. In recent years, Calculus has appeared in up to 50% of questions.

  • Algebra: This is the foundational topic. It consistently appears as Question 1.

  • Complex Numbers: This topic reliably appears within the first four questions (Section A).


Paper 2 Trends

Paper 2 requires strong literacy and logic skills to interpret word-heavy questions.

  • Statistics and Probability: These topics dominate Section B. Questions on Hypothesis Testing and the Normal Distribution are high-frequency requirements for the long questions (Q8-10).

  • Coordinate Geometry: Questions on The Line and The Circle consistently appear in the first three questions of Section A.

Exam Timing Strategy

Time management is the primary cause of grade loss in Higher Level Maths. You have 150 minutes to secure 300 marks.

Section A (Concepts & Skills)

  • Structure: 6 Questions (30 marks each)

  • Time Allocation: 10 minutes per question

  • Total Time: 60 minutes

Section B (Contexts & Applications)

  • Structure: 4 Questions (50 marks each)

  • Time Allocation: 20 minutes per question

  • Total Time: 80 minutes

    Buffer Time: This schedule leaves 10 minutes for reading the paper and review.

    Key Tactic: If you are stuck on a difficult part for more than 2 minutes, move on immediately. Secure attempt marks on the next question rather than wasting time on a single part.

Annual Study Plan

Follow this structured approach to cover the syllabus efficiently.

Phase 1 (Sept - Dec) Focus on core tools: Algebra, Functions, and Trigonometry. These are prerequisites for the rest of the course.

Phase 2 (Jan - Mar) Focus on high-weighting topics: Differential Calculus, Integration, and Inferential Statistics.

Phase 3 (Apr - June) Focus on exam technique. Switch from textbook learning to completing full past papers under timed conditions.

Common Exam Errors

These are frequent errors identified by our teachers that result in lost marks.


1. Integration Constants: Forgetting the $+C$ in indefinite integrals.

2. Calculator Modes: Using Degree mode instead of Radian mode for Calculus and Trigonometry.

3. Missing Units: Failing to include units (e.g., cm, m², €) in final answers.

4. Verification: Failing to check the validity of answers in Algebra (e.g., verifying log inputs are positive).
