Total Time: 2.5 Hours (150 Minutes).
Total Marks: 400 Marks.
Structure: Two Sections (Section 1 & Section 2).
Golden Ratio: Section 1 is 25% of the marks; Section 2 is 75% of the marks.
This section tests your breadth of knowledge across the entire syllabus. It is designed to be fast-paced.
Format: You are given 15 questions.
Requirement: You must answer 10 questions.
Marks: 100 Marks (Each question is worth 10 marks).
Content: Definitions, acronyms (e.g., PAYE, VAT), simple calculations (e.g., Break-Even point), and true/false questions.
Examiner's Tip: Although you only need to answer 10, I strongly recommend answering as many as possible. The examiner will mark them all and award you the marks for your best 10. This is your "insurance policy" against a silly mistake.
Timing: Spend no more than 30–35 minutes here.
This section tests your depth of knowledge and ability to apply theory to examples.
Format: You are given 9 questions (divided into Part 1 and Part 2).
Requirement: You must answer 4 questions total.
The "Part 1 & Part 2" Rule: You cannot just pick any 4 questions. You must follow this structure:
One question from Part 1 (usually People in Business, Consumer Law, Domestic Environment).
One question from Part 2 (usually Enterprise, Management, Marketing, Finance).
Two other questions from either Part 1 or Part 2.
Marks: 300 Marks (Each question is worth 75 marks).
Structure of a Question: Each long question is typically split into 5 sub-parts (A, B, C, D, E), ranging from 10 to 20 marks each.
Timing: You have roughly 25–30 minutes per question (depending on how long you spent on Section 1)
An analysis of the last 7 exam papers, including the deferred sittings, identifies consistent patterns in topic distribution.
There is an incredibly high statistical probability that Question 1 in Section 2 will focus on Unit 1 (People in Business).
The Pattern: From 2020 to 2025, Q1 has consistently covered Consumer Conflict, Contract Law, or Industrial Relations.
The Shift: In recent years (2024/2025), we are seeing Business Ethics bleed into this question (e.g., 2025 Q1 E), linking the Consumer directly to Social Responsibility.
Strategy: Students can "bank" Unit 1. If they master the Consumer Protection Act and Industrial Relations topic, they are almost guaranteed a full long question in Q1.
Question 2 is remarkably consistent as the home for Unit 2 (Domestic Environment).
The Pattern: This slot is dominated by Categories of Industry (Primary/Secondary/Tertiary), Government & Economy, and Ownership Structures.
The Shift: In 2025 and 2022, Taxation appeared here, whereas previously it often floated to Q6 or Q7. This suggests a merging of Macro-economy (Unit 2) and Household/Business Finance (Unit 3) within this specific question slot.
While Management and Finance are spread out, Marketing acts as the "closer" of the exam paper.
The Pattern: The Marketing Mix (4Ps), Market Research, and Break-Even charts almost exclusively appear in the final two questions (Q8 or Q9) or occasionally Q7.
Strategy: Students who struggle with math (Finance/Ratios) often rely on Marketing as their alternative choice. Since Q8 and Q9 are late in the paper, fatigue is a factor. We should ensure our Marketing revision material is punchy and high-energy to counteract exam fatigue at this stage.
Use this table to identify which topics appeared in specific questions across recent years. This includes data from standard and deferred sittings.
| Question | Paper 1 Trend (Short Qs) | Paper 2 Trend (Long Qs) |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Taxation / Government & Economy | People in Business (Consumer Law) |

| Q3 | Management Skills (Leading) | International Trade & The EU |
| Q4 | Marketing (Break-Even) / Expansion | People in Business (Industrial Relations) |
| Q5 | Management (POC) / Enterprise | Enterprise & Management Skills |
| Q6 | Categories of Industry / Marketing | Finance & Insurance |
| Q7 | Marketing (4Ps & Break-Even) | Human Resource Management (HRM) |
| Q8 | Finance / Business Expansion | Marketing (Mix & Research) |
| Q9 | Management (POC) / Community Dev | Marketing & Business Expansion |
| Q10 | Finance / Ratio Analysis | N/A |
| Q11 | Management / Enterprise | N/A |
| Q12 | Finance / Taxation | N/A |

| Q14 | International Trade | N/A |
| Q15 | Management (POC) / Government | N/A |
The exam is 2.5 hours long (150 minutes) and carries a total of 400 marks. Poor time management is the primary reason students fail to finish the paper.
The Golden Rule: Spend roughly 25% of your time on Section 1 and 75% on Section 2.
Reading Time (5 Minutes):
Read the entire paper.
Select your 4 Long Questions immediately. Do not switch halfway through.
Highlight keywords (verbs like "List", "Explain", "Calculate") in the questions.
Section 1: Short Questions (30 Minutes):
Marks: 100 Marks (Answer 10 of 15, 10 marks each).
Strategy: Aim to answer 12 questions if possible to cover any mistakes. Do not spend more than 3-4 minutes per question. If you are stuck, move on.
Section 2: Long Questions (110 Minutes):
Marks: 300 Marks (Answer 4 questions, 75 marks each).
Strategy: You have 27 minutes per question.
Strictly adhere to this limit. Spending 45 minutes on your "favorite" question steals time from the others. A brilliant answer and an unfinished answer will always score lower than two good answers.
Review (5 Minutes):
Check that you have answered the required number of questions.
Ensure all calculations have units (€, %, units).
Key Tactic: If you are stuck on a difficult part for more than 2 minutes, move on immediately. Secure attempt marks on the next question rather than wasting time on a single part.

Follow this structured approach to cover the syllabus efficiently.
Phase 1 (Sept–Oct): The Anchor (Unit 1) — Guaranteed Q1.
Phase 2 (Nov–Dec): The Money (Units 3 & 4) — Finance & Management.
Phase 3 (Jan–Feb): The Closer (Units 5 & 6) — Marketing & Enterprise.
Phase 4 (Mar–Apr): The Big Picture (Units 2 & 7) — Domestic & International.
Phase 5 (May–June): Exam Technique — Timing & Mock Papers.
Goal: Lock in Section 2, Question 1. This question almost always covers Unit 1.
Focus Topics:
Consumer Law: Sale of Goods & Supply of Services Act 1980 (Merchantable Quality vs. Fit for Purpose).
Consumer Protection: Consumer Protection Act 2007 (Misleading claims, Aggressive practices).
Industrial Relations: The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) and Trade Unions.
Contract Law: The essential elements of a contract (Offer, Acceptance, Consideration).
Technical Skill: Learn the "SEE" Method (Statement, Explain, Example) immediately. Do not write one-word answers.
Monthly Milestone: Complete 2023 & 2024 Section 2, Question 1 under timed conditions (25 mins).
Goal: Master the numerical questions. Finance often scares students, but in Ordinary Level, it is repetitive and high-scoring.
Focus Topics:
Household & Business Finance: Cash Flow Forecasts (filling in the blanks).
Insurance: Principles of Insurance (Utmost Good Faith, Insurable Interest, Indemnity).
Taxation: PAYE, VAT, Corporation Tax.
Management Activities: Planning, Organizing, Controlling (POC).
Technical Skill: Ratio Analysis. Learn the formulas for Liquidity (Current Ratio) and Profitability (Net Margin).
Warning: Remember your endings! Ratios end in :1, percentages end in %.
Monthly Milestone: Complete a full Cash Flow Forecast question and a Ratio Analysis question without looking at notes.
Spend 2.5 hours doing one full past paper (e.g., 2022) strictly adhering to the timing strategy:
Section 1: 30 Mins.
Section 2: 30 Mins per question.
Goal: Prepare for Section 2, Questions 8 & 9. Marketing is the "closer" of the paper and is essential for students who dislike heavy theory.
Focus Topics:
Marketing Mix (The 4 Ps): Product, Price, Place, Promotion.
Product Life Cycle: Drawing and labeling the curve (Intro, Growth, Maturity, Saturation, Decline).
Market Research: Desk vs. Field research.
Enterprise: Characteristics of an Entrepreneur (Risk-taker, Decisive).
Technical Skill: Break-Even Charts.
Crucial: You must practice drawing this from scratch. Label the X-axis (Units) and Y-axis (Money). Mark the Margin of Safety.
Monthly Milestone: Draw 3 perfect Break-Even charts from 3 different years (e.g., 2021, 2022, 2024).
Goal: Lock in Section 2, Question 3 (International Trade) and Question 2 (Domestic).
Focus Topics:
Unit 7 (International): The EU (Single Market, Euro), Importing vs. Exporting, Transnational Companies (TNCs).
Unit 2 (Domestic): Categories of Industry (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary).
Community Development: How businesses help the local community.
Technical Skill: Definitions. This section is heavy on specific terms (e.g., "Balance of Trade" vs. "Balance of Payments").
Monthly Milestone: Create a "Cheat Sheet" of acronyms: EU, EMU, IBEC, ISME, ICTU.
Goal: Speed and Precision. Stop learning new content; start refining answers.
Week 1-2: Section 1 Drills.
Go through the last 10 years of Short Questions.
Target: Answer 12 questions in 35 minutes.
Week 3-4: The "Part 1 & 2" Check.
Ensure you are not over-reliant on just one section.
Strategy Check: Confirm you have:
Q1 (People/Consumer) ready.
Q3 (International) ready.
Q8/9 (Marketing) ready.
One backup (Finance or Enterprise).
Final Week: Review your "Common Errors" list (Labels on charts, Letter layouts, Units in math).
Ordinary Level examiners report the same technical mistakes every year. Avoid these four specific errors to improve your grade immediately:
1. The "List" vs. "Explain" Trap:
The Error: Writing long paragraphs when asked to "List" or giving one-word answers when asked to "Explain".
The Fix: "List" means bullet points. "Explain" or "Describe" means Statement + Explanation + Example (SEE method). If the question is worth 15 marks, three bullet points are not enough.
2. Break-Even Chart Labels:
The Error: Drawing the lines correctly but failing to label the axes and specific points.
The Fix: You must label the X-axis (Units) and Y-axis (Price/Cost in €). You must also clearly mark the Fixed Costs (FC) line, Total Revenue (TR), Total Costs (TC), and the Break-Even Point (BEP). Unlabeled lines lose easy marks.
3. Ratio Analysis Formatting:
The Error: Calculating the correct number but using the wrong format.
The Fix: Know your endings.
Liquidity/Solvency ratios must end in :1 (e.g., 2:1).
Profitability ratios must end in % (e.g., 15%).
Period ratios must end in Days/Weeks/Months.
4. Business Letter Layout:
The Error: Writing the content of a letter but ignoring the formal structure.
The Fix: Marks are awarded for the layout alone. Ensure you include:
Sender's address (Top Right).
Date (Below Sender's Address).
Recipient's name and address (Top Left).
Salutation (Dear Mr./Ms...).
"Re:" (Topic).
Sign-off (Yours sincerely/faithfully) and Signature
Review the exact history of every question from the last six years of standard sittings. Use this matrix to identify "Anchors" — questions that remain consistent year after year.
